Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss have spent more than a decade helping thousands of individuals permanently overcome their addictive behavior. Their journey to create Passages began simply; a father trying to save his son from the grips of addiction.
Chris and Pax always shared an especially close bond, but by the time Pax reached his teens he formed a heavy dependence on marijuana, alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. Chris then began a tireless ten-year process of attempting to help Pax, but everyone he turned to assured him that addiction is chronic, incurable, and manageable only though continual 12 Step meetings.
Pax continued to try rehabs, psychiatrists, hospitals, detox units, and AA programs, but was frustrated by the lack of results. Nothing worked, and with Pax facing death, Chris refused to accept the hopelessness of supposedly “established” addiction treatment methods. He realized that they needed to understand why Pax was using drugs and alcohol in order to heal him.
They decided to form their own program that would address the underlying causes of Pax’s behavior and recognize that addiction is a dependency, not a disease. This holistic, non-12 Step, individualized approach has worked for thousands of people, including Pax, who has been sober since September 2002.
The Prentiss’, both Southern California natives, decided to launch Passages Malibu in 2001. Their second facility, Passages Ventura, opened in 2009. They continue to run both treatment centers and co-authored the best-selling book, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure, in 2005.
