Bufotenine is a hallucinogenic drug found in certain types of mushrooms, plants, and also in the secretion of glands from the skin of toads. Commonly known as "frog poison", bufotenine has a high potential for addiction and can cause irreversible damage to the brain and central nervous system. Bufotenine acts by blocking transmission of the neurotransmitter Serotonin in the brain, which disrupts the circulation of nerve impulses. A disruption or imbalance of Serotonin has been shown to lead to mood disorders, depression, and other psychological problems. Bufotenine also may cause constriction of blood vessels, increased blood pressure, hallucinations, and in extreme cases, psychosis.
